Frequently asked questions

What is Nottingham Ambition Giving Day?

Nottingham Ambition Giving Day is a 36-hour online fundraising challenge commencing 8am BST on Tuesday 1 November 2023 and running until 8pm BST on Wednesday 2 November 2023. It’s a chance for the University of Nottingham community to come together and support each other by giving to one of our four causes and/or sharing our messages via alumni networks. Every gift is a great way to invest in our future.

Why are you using the phrase 'Built on wisdom' and why do I see the term 'wisdom' used so much?

The University of Nottingham's motto is 'Sapietnia Urbs Conditur' which means 'A City is Build on Wisdom'. The motto was first used in 1903 when we were University College Nottingham. It is a unique motto unlike any other held by a university or college in the UK. If you’d like to know more please contact supportus@nottingham.ac.uk.

Why get involved?

It’s a chance for us to come together and celebrate some of the things that make UoN special. We’re proud of our past and ambitious for our future. We hope you are too! By becoming an Ambassador you can help share our Day with alumni around the world: some won’t be aware of our fundraising priorities and won’t know until a peer shares a message with them via social media. By donating to the Giving Day you’ll be confirming to others that it’s a worthwhile cause. Also, you’ll be unlocking thousands of pounds of larger gifts! Find out more on our challenge pages.

How do I get involved?

You can donate to any one of our four causes by clicking on the ‘Donate’ button and/or sign up to be a Giving Day Ambassador on the ‘Ambassador’ page. If there is another way you’d like to get involved please contact us on supportus@nottingham.ac.uk or by calling +44 (0)115 823 2805.

Is my gift automatically counted in the totals for the Nottingham Ambition Giving Day?

If you give online through the form on the Nottingham Ambition Giving Day website, your gift will automatically be added to the totals immediately. If you choose to donate in another way (by post referencing 'Nottingham Ambition Giving Day' for example), your gift will be added manually.

How does matched funding work?

All gifts given before we reach £80,000 will unlock the same amount for the cause you choose: £50 given to Scholarships for disadvantaged students will turn into £100. We are able to do this thanks to the generosity of alumni who have donated to the University already and agreed for it to be used where it is needed most.

Where will the funds go?

You can choose where your funds go to using the drop-down list on the cause page or donation form. You can give to 'Cascade: student-led projects', 'Medical research at the University of Nottingham'. 'Mental health support at the Students' Union' or 'Scholarships for disadvantaged students'. If would prefer to give to another area of the University, email us at supportus@nottingham.ac.uk and we’d love to include your support in our Day.

Can I give here after the Day finishes on November 2?

Yes. We will continue to accept gifts to our causes throughout November. Gifts will continue to be matched until we reach an £80,000 total and challenges remain effective. Donors can also still be named and share messages on our Donor Wall if they choose to.

I’m not that keen on social media, so how else can I share?

Email us at supportus@nottingham.ac.uk with a quote or two, an image or the reason you’re donating, and we will use it on our social media channels during the Giving Day. You can also email and text your classmates to spread the word and inspire them to give! If you’d like to talk about it please call +44 (0)115 823 2805.

Is my payment secure?

Yes. All payments through the Nottingham Ambition Giving Day website will be securely processed by Stripe. Any gifts through our usual online giving channels are also processed securely.

There is a reference on my bank account to 'Hubbub.net', is this anything to worry about and how are they affiliated to University of Nottingham?

Please don’t be concerned. Hubbub.net is part of Sponsorcraft – the site provider for University of Nottingham’s giving day software. To process donations via the site, Hubbub uses an API integration to connect to our payment gateway, Stripe. At the time of making your gift, Stripe will verify your card for processing by placing a £0.00 transaction on your account with the reference 'Hubbub.net'. Card authentication 'mock-chargers' are used widely across the banking industry to verify that accounts are genuine, while also protecting you and your account against fraud. If you have further questions please contact a member of our team via supportus@nottingham.ac.uk

Are my donations eligible for Gift Aid?

Yes. University of Nottingham has charitable status for all UK tax purposes. So if you are eligible for the Gift Aid scheme Nottingham can claim an extra 25% on donations you have made in the last four years and on future donations once we receive your declaration. Please note that we do we do not have a charity registration number because the University of Nottingham is an exempt charity under Schedule 2 of the Charities Act 1993. For more information please go to the HMRC Website.

Can I see my gift on this website?

Yes. If you’ve chosen not to make your gift anonymous, you can take a look at the donor wall to see your name.

Is there another way to donate during Nottingham Ambition Giving Day, other than online?

Yes, if you’re interested in other ways that you can give, please email supportus@nottingham.ac.uk or call +44 (0)115 823 2805 we’ll be more than happy to help you make your gift.
